Mason Jar Monday

March 17, 2014

Yes I know everyone loves mason jars... They are all over Pinterest therefor everyone has a mason jar craft project... This is one I have done before but love the outcome so much that I do them for gifts for housewarming, teacher gifts, Easter crafts, etc... I even have them in the kids bathrooms for toothbrush holders and on my vanity as makeup brush holders.

You start with a mason jar of any size... I try to buy these in a flat at Joanns with a 40% off coupon and since they take competitor's coupons, I usually have a 20% total purchase coupon as well. They end up being much cheaper than anywhere else I have found them.

For this project I used the 16 oz size.

First I spray the jar with a coat of black chalkboard spray (I used Valspar from Lowes). This dries pretty quickly so then I hit it with one more coat.

(I also took this time to spray paint pinto beans in matching colors for my apothecary jars)

After letting both coats dry completely, use whatever color you have chosen to go over the black. In this case I have used Valspar 85089 Tropical Oasis and Kylon Hot Pink. I wanted some nice Spring-ish colors. Do this twice to make sure it's all even and covers the black.

I let this dry over night to make sure that all 4 coats are completely dry.

Take your nice dry yet tacky feeling jars and now you are going to scrape the raised parts of the jar... like the word "Ball" or "Mason", anything that sticks up above the glass jar. This gives it a more vintage feeling and it's the reason you first painted your jar with black chalkboard paint.

After you are happy with the way your jar looks, give it a nice coat of clear satin spray. I used Valspar (again because it's cheap at Lowes) clear satin. I like the satin because I think it looks better than the glossy. Your choice.

Once it's all dry, I like to tie a bow of twine for that finished touch!

and this is your finished project!

These are super cute for flowers, pencils, makeup brushes or anything else you want to put in them. I also did beginning of the year teacher gifts with these in yellow. You can see the finished product here.

Here are some more super cute mason jar ideas via pinterest.

So anyway, that's all I've got for you today!!! Enjoy your Monday & keep caffeinated!!!
